Commercial ironers for hotels, care homes and restaurants
In short: a commercial ironer, also called a rotary or flatwork ironer or a mangle, dries and presses flat linen by passing it around a heated roll. Technorette supplies Electrolux and Miele ironers from 830 mm tabletop models to industrial ironers over 2.5 m wide, electric or gas, delivered from the Netherlands to Great Britain.
In many hotels and care homes, sheets and pillowcases still come out of the dryer and go onto a folding table, or are ironed by hand when someone has a spare hour. A commercial ironer turns that job into a steady routine: linen in at one side, pressed and ready to fold at the other.
As an authorised Electrolux Professional dealer in the Netherlands, and a supplier of Miele Professional machines, we advise on the size and heating that suit your volume and your room. For washers and our general terms for UK customers, see our commercial laundry equipment for UK businesses.

Who needs a commercial ironer?
Hotels and B&Bs
Sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases are the bulk of hotel flatwork. An ironer gives the crisp finish guests notice and takes far less staff time than hand finishing.
Care homes
Bed linen is changed often and needs to go back into circulation quickly. A compact ironer lets laundry staff finish bedding in-house rather than folding it creased or sending it out.
Restaurants and caterers
Tablecloths and napkins show every crease. A small 230 V ironer such as the Miele HM 16-83 suits a restaurant that wants to keep table linen in-house.
Commercial laundries use wider, faster ironers, often with a feeding table or folding unit. Whatever the size, the ironer only works well if the washing and drying side keeps up; see our commercial tumble dryers for the drying stage.
Roll width, roll diameter and throughput
Two figures decide what a flatwork ironer can do: the working width and the roll diameter.
- Working width sets the largest item you can feed. Measure your widest sheet or tablecloth and decide whether you feed it full width or folded in half. Too narrow, and every large item needs refolding before it goes in.
- Roll diameter sets the heated contact surface. A larger roll dries the linen faster, so it can run at a higher speed. That is why a Miele PRI 421 G with a 365 mm roll is rated at 78 kg per hour, while the PRI 214 with a 210 mm roll is rated at 33 kg per hour.
- Residual moisture. Manufacturers state throughput at a given residual moisture; both Miele figures above assume 25%. Linen straight from the washer usually holds more water, so real output is lower unless it is briefly pre-dried in a tumble dryer.
Tell us your daily kilos of flatwork, the largest items and the hours your staff can spend ironing, and we will work out a width and roll size that fits.
Electric, gas or steam heating
Electric
The simplest to install. Small ironers such as the Miele HM 16-83 run on 230 V; mid-size models such as the PRI 214 need 3-phase 400 V, and large industrial ironers draw considerable power: the Electrolux IC64821FLF is rated at 38 kW.
Gas
Common on wider ironers. Needs a gas supply of adequate capacity, a flue or exhaust to outside and a Gas Safe registered engineer for commercial appliances. Tell us your gas type: UK natural gas is G20, and the ironer must be set up for it.
Steam
Only worth it if you already run a steam boiler, as many larger laundries do. Several Electrolux IC and IV models are available in steam versions.
Running costs depend on your UK energy contract, so we do not publish a cost per kilo. We send the manufacturer’s connection and consumption data so you can compare electric and gas using your own unit rates.
Ventilation and installation
An ironer drives the remaining moisture out of the linen as vapour. Most commercial ironers have an extraction fan that must be ducted outside, and gas models also need their flue gases removed. The room itself gets warm, so plan for general ventilation as well.
- Space: allow for the machine plus a feeding area in front and room to receive and fold the linen. Larger ironers are often fed by two people.
- Access: an industrial ironer is long and heavy. Check doors, corridors and floor loading, and tell us whether there is a forklift or a ground-floor route.
- Shutdown: let the ironer complete its cool-down sequence before switching off at the isolator. A hot roll left standing can damage the padding.
- Safety at work: ironers have finger guards and emergency stops. Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, employers are responsible for training staff to use them safely.
Electrical work should be carried out to BS 7671 by a qualified electrician. Installation can be done by your own contractor from our specifications; installation by our engineers is quoted separately.

New or refurbished flatwork ironer?
Our current ironer range is mainly new Electrolux Professional and Miele machines. Refurbished ironers come through our workshop less often than washers and dryers; when they do, they go through the same workshop inspection and testing as our other machines, with worn parts replaced, and are priced well below new. If a refurbished flatwork ironer is what you are after, tell us the width you need and we will let you know what is available or coming in.
Brand-specific ranges are covered on our Electrolux Professional for the UK and Miele Professional for the UK pages.
Delivery, import and support in Great Britain
A sale to a UK business is an export, so no Dutch VAT is charged when properly documented. You need a GB EORI number and, as importer, pay UK import VAT and any duty; your customs broker confirms the rate. General information, not tax advice. Large ironers travel on a lorry and need an agreed unloading plan.
We have no UK service network. You get advice by phone and email in English, parts sent from the Netherlands, and on-site visits by arrangement, quoted in advance. For routine servicing, a local commercial laundry engineer is usually quicker.

Commercial ironers: questions from UK buyers
What is the difference between a commercial ironer, a rotary ironer and a mangle?
They are largely the same machine. “Commercial ironer”, “rotary ironer” and “flatwork ironer” are the usual UK terms; “mangle” is the older word, and the Dutch term mangel appears on our catalogue pages. All of them press damp flat linen around a heated roll.
Is a commercial ironer worth it for a care home or small hotel?
If staff regularly spend time hand-ironing or folding creased bedding, or you pay an outside laundry mainly for finishing, an ironer is worth considering. A compact model such as the Miele HM 16-83 runs on 230 V and fits a small laundry room.
What working width do I need?
Measure your widest sheet or tablecloth and decide whether you will feed it full width or folded. The working width must take that item with some margin. We can check your linen sizes against the models available.
Can I iron linen straight from the washer?
Sometimes, depending on the ironer and your washer’s spin. Miele, for example, states throughput at 25% residual moisture, which is drier than linen straight from most washers. A short pre-dry in a tumble dryer often brings output closer to the rated figure.
Should I choose an electric or a gas ironer?
Electric is simplest to install and suits small and mid-size ironers. Gas is common on wider ironers and needs a gas supply, a flue and a Gas Safe registered engineer. Compare both using your own energy unit rates; we send the consumption data.
What ventilation does an ironer need?
Most commercial ironers have an extraction fan that must be ducted outside to remove vapour, and gas models also need their flue gases removed. Because the room gets warm, general ventilation matters too. We send the duct size and airflow for each model.
Do you sell refurbished commercial ironers?
Occasionally. Our current range is mainly new Electrolux Professional and Miele ironers. When a refurbished ironer is available it is priced well below new; tell us the width you need and we will let you know what we have.
How are large ironers delivered to the UK?
By lorry from Apeldoorn, with an unloading plan agreed in advance. As an export, no Dutch VAT is charged; you pay UK import VAT and any duty and need a GB EORI number. Check the details with your customs broker; this is not tax advice.
